Why you should buy organic
Establishing and maintaining a healthy diet can be difficult to muster at times, but regardless it is imperative that you purchase organic foods whenever possible.
Conventional farmers tend to use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones to truly ‘create’ the best possible yields on their farms. Unfortunately, these unnatural products can cause harm to your family.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “pesticides have been linked to numerous health risks, including: brain and nervous system toxicity, cancer, hormone disruption” as well as a variety of other devastating issues.
EWG recently released their 2012 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides, which was strewn with startling facts about our produce. Approximately “98% of conventional apples have detectable levels of pesticides” and “every single nectarine USDA tested had measurable pesticide residues. This information indicates how dire pesticide exposure is in the United States.
There have also been studies that link the rising occurrences of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to pesticide use. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a study was conducted on the connection between ADHD and pesticides, specifically Organophosphates. This study was published in the journal of Pediatrics and “asserts a connection between exposure of high levels of pesticides and the development of ADHD.”
On a positive note, it is possible to purge your system of harmful pesticides by eliminating exposure through an organic diet. The University of Washington indicated that it took a mere 5 days for children in a study to become pesticide free.
There are pros and cons to purchasing organic food. Although the health benefits of an organic diet are remarkable, organic foods do cost more money. If finances are an issue, it is imperative to buy organic whenever possible. You can attempt to cut costs by buying locally or in bulk.
